Future Skills Circle on AI Competence
At Land Oberösterreich’s Future Skills Circle, experts and the Linz hub aligned on AI literacy beyond tools alone.
On the same day as the Linz hub’s first school AI literacy workshop, Young AI Leaders Austria joined Upper Austria’s Future Skills Circle on AI competence at Land Oberösterreich’s Zukunftsakademie.
What happened
Prof. Stefan Oppl framed the core question: Do all people really need all skills—and if not, who needs what? Experts from science, education, and business agreed that AI literacy is not only about mastering tools. It means critical thinking, problem-solving with AI, and resilience amid accelerating change. As Prof. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers put it: “Future Skills must prepare us to handle an accelerating unpreparedness.”
The hub is also building trainer capacity—through Foundations of LLM Mastery (Austrian Scientific Computing & EuroCC Austria) and the DISKIT Digital Skills Trainer Program (OeAD and Institut CONEDU)—with plans to scale literacy programmes across Europe together with peers from Zurich and Viseu.
Why it matters
AI literacy underpins the future of work. Scaling it toward one million people will take partnerships across education, business, and policy—so that people learn to prompt, evaluate, and integrate AI without falling into cognitive offloading.
