IEEE GenAI for Good Challenge: Health Equity in The Gambia

A Linz team builds toward a WhatsApp health assistant for diabetes and hypertension guidance in The Gambia.

As part of the IEEE GenAI for Good Challenge health spotlight, Peter Kristof Velosy, Jan Korytar, and the Young AI Leaders team from Linz focused on a clear, solvable gap in The Gambia: mobile phones and WhatsApp are widespread, yet reliable guidance on diabetes and hypertension remains hard to reach.

What happened

The team’s standard was not a shiny isolated chatbot, but infrastructure that survives the real world—integrated with existing frameworks, wired to structured data, and compatible with fragmented clinic and government workflows. Design principles included WHO protocols, clinical guidelines, strict privacy practices, and transparency: the tool should cite sources so patients and clinicians can trust it.

Success, in their words, would look almost boring: thousands of people using a WhatsApp bot every month to manage non-communicable diseases, quietly and reliably. Follow the challenge series: IEEE GenAI for Good.

Why it matters

The most meaningful AI often looks like dependable infrastructure. This project shows how Linz engineering talent can serve global health equity where delivery channels already exist—and trust is non-negotiable.
